Plot
The movie begins with the character of Thomas (Dylan OBrien)Waking up in a metal elevator leading to a massive, enclosed space called The Glade. He cannot even remember his name, his own name. The boys in the Glade have also lost their memories and constructed a mini-society that runs to survive. The Maze encloses the Glade, a huge and constantly shifting maze of lethal monsters known as Grievers.
Runners go into the Maze every day to explore it and discover a potential way out, but none of them have managed. The entry of Thomas is a change. He does not follow the rules like others, he dares to defy the hazards of the Maze. His inquisitiveness and bravery motivate others, in particular, Minho (Ki Hong Lee), who is the main runner, and Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), who is the ethical compass of the group.
The mystery is further enhanced soon after when Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) , the first girl to ever enter the Glade, arrives. She carries a note that has it, she is the last one ever. When the Maze turns more and more dangerous, and Griever attacks start to take place within the Glade, Thomas organizes a last effort to escape. Towards the climax of the film, they find out that they are subjects of an experiment by a strong organization known as WCKD (World Catastrophe Killzone Department), that is examining the way humans react to extreme stress. The survivors come out to a new life, with no guarantee of success, when they find out that they are only half-way through.
Performance
Dylan O’Brien gives a fierce performance as Thomas that is emotionally very strong. His characterization is filled with terror and courage, which makes him a likable and motivating hero. O’Brien manages to shift between being lost and being a leader, and this transition perfectly reflects the fight of a young man who should overcome his fear to become a leader.
Kaya Scodelario is an added bonus, as acting as Teresa, she brings with her a balance of intelligence and determination that is a welcome change in an all-male world of the Glade. Thomas Brodie-Sangster is a bright star as Newt, he is sensitive and ethically right, and Will Poulter as Gally ideally represents the clash between order and defiance. The character of Minho played by Ki Hong Lee is vibrant and self-confident, which is an embodiment of allegiance and friendship during a crisis.
The group dynamics form a convincing feeling of neighborhood and tension. The characters symbolize various reactions to fear, i.e. courage, control, doubt, or defiance, and the Glade is the reflection of human society in a critical situation.
Direction and Screenplay
First-time director Wes Ball has exceptional mastery of tone and pacing. His visual effects experience makes the design of the Maze seem to have a dynamic realist quality–the tall stone walls, the mechanical transitions, and the dark corridors make the Maze seem both awe-inspiring and captivating. Ball balances world-building and character-driven storytelling, which makes the human struggle the focus despite the spectacle.
Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers, and T.S. Nowlin screenplay adaptably recreate the novel by Dashner, including plot simplification due to the intricate mythology of the book. There is a limited amount of dialogue that puts an emphasis on tension and teamwork. This is told in the style of discovery, and it reflects the slow awakening of Thomas. The authors balance between mystery and revelation very well so that the reader feels the confusion and the willpower of the protagonist.
The way Ball moves turns the closed environment into a living being- every turn of the Maze is a symptom of the inner struggle of the characters. He is preoccupied with fear, loyalty, and sacrifice, which propels The Maze Runner further than an adventure novel into the realm of ethics of survival.
Music
The score is very important in creating the suspense and emotional intensity in the film by John Paesano. The music is a mix of orchestra and electronic textures to reflect the difference between the human feelings and the threat of the machine. Rhythmic percussion is used in the scenes in the Maze to increase tension, and the moments of reflection and unity are accompanied by softer strings.
The heroic and melancholic theme is a summary of the boldness of youth in the face of the unknown. The music by Paesano does not overwhelm the image but instead helps to create the feeling of constant motion and anxiety. There is also good use of silence especially when exploring scenes which increases fear of the unknown. The music ends up supporting the Maze as a physical and mental battleground.
Theme
It is Legend at its most fundamental level a story of identity, authority and the human desire to live. Memory loss is the metaphor of depriving people of their individuality, making characters identify themselves by their actions and not by their past. The Glade is a microcosm of society-structured, rule-ridden and terror of change.
The defiant nature of Thomas in rebelling against the strict order of the Gladers is a symbol of the age-old struggle between security and liberty. Not to accept the Maze as his destiny pushes the group to liberation, which is a human instinct to find the truth at risk. The movie also challenges authority and experimentation and makes WCKD a metaphor of authoritarian regimes that allow cruelty under the banner of progress.
The other theme is unity and sacrifice power. The solution of the Maze does not require the strength of a person but trust. The boys learn through cooperation that they need to be courageous and compassionate to survive. The film is finally a declaration of hope–the faith that despite manipulation and fear, man can get back on track.
Cinematography and Visuals
The cinematography of Enrique Chediak is a breathtaking masterpiece to capture the scale and the threat of the Maze. The application of natural lighting to the Glade is a stark contrast with the cold metallic sound of the labyrinth, which is the representation of the battle between nature and power. Sweep shots are used to underscore how enormous the Maze is, whereas handheld camera shots are used to bring immediacy and mayhem to action scenes.
The design of the production is outstanding. The walls of the Maze, which keep on changing, the overgrown vines, and the decayed technology make the Maze seem mythic and scientific at the same time. The effects and CGI are used in harmony to create the film on the basis of gritty realism. The tight shots create the tension in the film and indicate that imprisonment can create not only fear but also bravery.
Even the Glade itself, with its primitive shelters and its green expanse, is a symbol of frail harmony, a momentary escape out of the mechanical nightmare beyond. This opposition intensifies the emotional investment, so every time the characters enter the Maze, they enter the unknown.
Conclusion
I Am Legend is an intriguing mixture of science fiction, mystery and human drama that embodies the theme of survival in a society that is regulated. The direction of the film by Wes Ball, along with a great young cast, provides the audience with a thrilling and thought-provoking movie. It poses the key questions concerning the identity, authority, and price of knowledge.
In addition to its action scenes, the movie is a metaphor of adolescence, of confusion, rebellion, and finding a purpose in a world of changing rules. It has the right balance of heart and suspense that makes it enduring among the youth and adult generations.
The Maze Runner is an example of a modern classic of dystopian films, which still reminds us the biggest maze, which we all need to escape, is not a wall-filled one but rather the one of fear, conformity and ignorance.
